The Association Archimedes has the purpose to promote research and projects in the field of musicology and archival sciences, with particular attention to music archives, collection of musical documents, as well as developing experimental research on the conservation and universal access to musicological documents.
Archimedes aims to carry out the integration of archival-historical studies in all musical areas, and the application of digital methodologies for the treatment and storage of audio products.
Archimedes wants to cooperate with scholars and music-passionates, to set up an international center for advanced studies and specialized training on musical archives and related technologies, aimed especially at young specialists and professionals.
Conferences, workshops and specialised thematic courses are promoted to encourage meetings, exchanges and debates, directly and online, in particular on innovations and experimental developments of musicology, processing and storage of sound.
The Archimedes Association was founded in 2012 following an agreement between the current President, Benedetto Benedetti, at that time coordinator for Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa of the European project ENArC (2010-2015), and Vice President of Archimedes Antonio Romiti, President of Istituto Storico Lucchese. These contacts, promoted a scientific cooperation between institutions in the field of historical archives, to carry out part of the ENArC activity plan, assigned in 2010 by the European Commission to International Center for Archival Research (ICARUS) in Vienna and several partners, including Scuola Normale Superiore.
The Associazione Archimedes has is headquarters in Lucca, particularly appropriate for its rich traditions in the archival field and musicology ( i.e. the composers Giacomo Puccini, Alfredo Catalani, Luigi Boccherini, Gaetano Luporini, as well as Istituto Musicale L.Boccherini and Music High School).
